We are in the process of building our Brain Economy Systems Change Lab. This will be adapted from that of the Systems Change Lab, funded by the Bezos Earth Fund. See the 2024 Technical Note from the Systems Change Lab.

A specialized working group will refine our methods for identifying key systems that must transform, identifying the most critical shifts within each system, translating these shifts into global targets, and selecting indicators with accompanying datasets that we use to monitor annual change.

We aim to outline our approach for assessing the world’s collective progress made toward targets and categorizing recent efforts for outcome indicators as on track; off track; well off track; right direction, no target; headed in the wrong direction; or insufficient data.

The Brain Economy Systems Change Lab would encompass the following steps of a policy process:

  • Horizon scanning and foresight, mapping opportunities and risks
  • Considering alternative futures instead of a single future
  • Addressing transformation failures holistically, combining direct and indirect interventions
  • Accounting for uncertainty and need for adaptation when choosing among policy options
  • Mainstreaming constant experimentation through regulatory sandboxes, innovation hubs and testbeds
  • Implementing stress-testing and evaluations for entire policy domains
  • Establishing mechanisms for regular review of the policy framework
  • Elaborating new corporate models to achieve a more inclusive balance between profit and social responsibility
  • Ensuring transparency and public engagement

We recommend this approach be adapted to different jurisdictions for optimal value and customization.
